Why doesn’t God ‘do something’ to end evil and suffering?

(God does have a plan, already begun, for doing something about evil and suffering. Understandably, however, the continuing presence of such problems in this world can be a significant challenge to believing that there is a God who cares and is in control.

We find in the story of Noah and the flood that God has considered a more immediate and decisive way to end conflict and suffering: by simply eliminating everyone and everything from the earth. In the bible, however, his deliberations of regret and resolve are recorded about not wanting to employ any such future action.

This is because the destruction of humankind would play right into the hand of God’s enemy, Satan, who is also at enmity with people because we are an object of God’s love and are precious to him.

The problem

When there is pain and suffering, therefore, we need to know that it is not something God himself does to us, nor is it because he has abandoned us or is against us. These things are the work of his enemy who seeks to corrupt and spoil the perfect world that God created and bring calamity and disorder. Satan has made it his mission to keep people eternally separated from God and consigned to the same fate of destruction and banishment that awaits him (i.e., in an eternal ‘death’).

From the bible we learn that evil and suffering were not in God’s perfect will and plan for this world but came about through a free-will choice made by humankind. It is we who became enticed by God’s enemy, Satan, about the (supposed) benefits of finding fulfilment in pursuits of our own choosing rather than having trust in the wisdom and goodness of our maker. Thus, it was the fall of humanity that allowed an assertion of wills other than God’s own into this world. The result is that things are not working entirely as God purposed. We therefore have experiences of disaster, evil and suffering which are a legacy of Satan’s continuing influence (called ‘the curse’) which is the work of an enemy intent on spoiling the creation while having God receive the blame.

Something done already

Despite what we may see and experience around us, we need to remember that God’s ultimate reality is in a realm of the ‘unseen’. Therefore, in his relentless love and mercy towards us, he has ‘already done something’ by visibly sending his own son, Jesus, into this world in human form. In great sacrifice, God was pouring out something of himself in the gift of an only son who became born to humanity and, in laying down his own innocent life, willingly suffered and died on our behalf to save us from the consequences of our own human failings and shortcomings, i.e., of all that would disqualify us from being in right relationship with a perfect and loving God. In this way, if we will but receive it, Jesus has already purchased our release from all accusation and paid the price for every consequence that justice before a righteous God would demand from us, thus enabling us to come into a right relationship with him both now and forever.

What help is there when facing challenges in the here and now?

Everything that Jesus did and taught as God’s son while here on earth, responded to all pain, suffering and wrongdoing as being manifestations of our enemy, Satan, whose works he took every opportunity to defeat. The records of Jesus’ life show that his focus was wholly on ‘undoing’ all consequences of the enemy’s influence whenever and wherever he could, particularly when it brought pain and suffering into people’s lives. With words of faith and truth, he brought deliverance, release, and freedom from every type of oppression and ultimately, in sacrificing his own life, he won a victory over death that could not hold him and enabled him to promise that his victorious life and spirit would be with us always.

Jesus regularly gave strong encouragement to his listeners about the need for making a decision about him right away in the here and now, and to be not distracted from maintaining our trust and faith in him so as to receive his free gift of reconciliation, and an impartation of his abiding life within. To do this means that in any present circumstance, when we turn to him, he offers not only the comfort of his presence and strength, but an assurance that he hears our prayers and requests, and can move on our behalf to be ‘an ever-present help in time of trouble’.

Will there be an end to evil and suffering?

Jesus gave many encouragements about maintaining an outlook of hope and readiness for his soon return. This is because it will usher in the completion of God’s plan (on a day known only to him) to re-establish his reign on earth that will bring an end to evil and suffering forever. This event will fulfil God’s plan to bring about a final and complete victory over his enemy, Satan, who will be forever banished and separated off, so that God will again have a place in a ‘new heaven and a new earth’ where he will be ‘pleased to dwell’ among his family of the redeemed forever.

Why not just wait and see?

There is a challenge, however, for each of us about whether we ourselves will be able to enter a realm filled with God’s presence of perfection, purity, and goodness, where his ways alone will prevail. To determine eligibility will require a distinction between ‘good’ and ‘evil’, i.e., those who belong to God (and through faith are right in their heart with him) and those who do not. To separate one from the other will require a change in Jesus’ role from Saviour to Judge - because only those relying on the justification provided by him will in good conscience be able to ‘stand’ in the overwhelming awesomeness of God’s presence. Jesus continually urged his hearers, as he urges us, to maintain our readiness for his return so as to be able to receive the eternal salvation and life that he has won for us in his death. He knows the futility of trying to offer our own justifications or of arguing for sincerely held beliefs of human origin.

How is it that evil and suffering are not stopped?

With evil and suffering continuing to abound, questions remain about what God, if existing at all, would not immediately ‘stop’ such things from happening. Surprisingly, we are reminded that the reason is not because God is inactive, unmindful, or lacking in compassion. Rather, it is because of his compassion that we are experiencing what we tend to see as a ‘delay’. When it comes to eliminating evil and its effects from this earth, God knows that, unfortunately but inevitably, his plan to end all pain and suffering will also bring an end to all further opportunity for people to be made right with him and to come into his presence of truth and light to live with him forever. Yet God remains hopeful that every person possible should hear and be offered their chance to choose him and become part of his family. His offer is available to all and can be received by simply and humbly putting faith in what Jesus has done on our behalf. Something that we can be sure about, is that for any person to miss out or to reject such opportunity is something that brings no pleasure to God.)

Preservation as Promised

The Lord . . . said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done. “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” Genesis 8: 21‑22 NIV

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. Romans 8:18‑25 NIV

Promise of a Coming Good

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 NIV

And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth.  Ephesians 1:10 NLT

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’

Present Good with Help that Prevails

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble. Psalm 46:1 GWT

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Romans 8:28 NLT

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 ESV

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 ESV

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 ESV

Readiness Needed for the Coming Good

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 

But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

Gaining Entry to the Good and Perfect

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.” Isaiah 57:15 NIV

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Romans 5:1‑11 NIV

Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in [Jesus]. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human praise more than praise from God. Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?” He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

“But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. And so you will bear testimony to me.

But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. Everyone will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. Stand firm, and you will win life.

“. . . There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Luke 21: 7‑33 NIV

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?” Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

“You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

“. . . If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them.

At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time. But in those days, following that distress, ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’

“At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.

“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

“At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 25: 14‑30 NIV

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” Matthew 25: 31‑46 NIV

Dear friends, this is now my [Peter’s] second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Saviour through your apostles. Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.

By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.

The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.

But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.

So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. 2 Peter 3: 1‑17 NIV
